What is the SSAT?

What exactly is the SSAT? The test is intended for students in grades 5 through 11 and it is administered at two levels: the upper level for students in grades 8-11, and the lower level for students in grades 5-7.

The SSAT provides a “common measure of student ability” and test scores are generally considered independent of a student’s academic achievement – thus, it generates a more standardized and holistic understanding of a student’s abilities and aptitude within a range of educational areas. Additionally, the test offers students, schools, admission officers and parents insight into a student’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

It is an important part of the application process for independent schools but it is not the only basis for admission; rather, it is considered in conjunction with academic grades and achievement, teacher referrals and individual interviews.

The test is comprised of multiple-choice questions, which are directed at a student’s verbal, quantitative (math) and reading abilities. The verbal section is intended to assess a student’s vocabulary, verbal reasoning and logical correlation of ideas. The math questions incorporate arithmetic, elementary algebra, and geometry concepts.
